As training for safeguarding adults is usually tailored to each specific working environment, dependent on which area or group within the NHS that you work in, there may be elements of your training that are not covered here; alternatively, there may be others covered here that are not relevant to you.

In such cases, where you are unsure of whether something applies to your role or workplace, then you must refer to local policy or procedures.

This session provides an overview of some of the most pressing international and local challenges in child protection including: child trafficking and county lines, gang-based exploitation, missing children, forced marriage and honour-based violence. It will also introduce new and evolving issues around the grooming of children for abuse online and cyberbullying.

It is designed to provide an initial overview of these issues. Further reading and face-to-face training is highly recommended to optimise your clinical understanding and practice.

This session will consider approaches to managing a case in which fabricated or induced illness (FII) is suspected. While the session is based on the perspective of a paediatrician who takes a referral for specialist appraisal of a suspected FII case, it demonstrates that other health professionals including GPs, emergency department doctors and nurses, the child and adolescent mental health team, health visitors, school nurses, therapists and dieticians, may be directly involved in this difficult area. Paediatric surgeons, anaesthetists and other specialists may also be involved.

Health professionals involved directly in these cases may include emergency department (A&E) medical and nursing staff, paediatricians, orthopaedic surgeons, surgeons and anaesthetists, paediatric intensivists, paediatric radiologists and forensic odontologists with essential contributions from the primary health care team - health visitor, school nurse and general practitioner.

It will cover the subtle ways in which sepsis may present and highlight the history, examination and the management of the patient with sepsis. NEWS has been used for this session and will shortly be updated to be aligned with NEWS2.
