The Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) covers people aged 16 and upwards in England and Wales, who cannot make some or all decisions for themselves. The ability to understand and make a decision when it needs to be made is called 'mental capacity'. The MCA protects the human rights of people who may lack mental capacity to make their own decisions.

Module 2 takes a more detailed look at acute pain. The first part of the module, Introduction, includes content to enable users to gain knowledge of the assessment and management of acute pain. The second section, Acute Pain Techniques, provides further detail on the treatment methods for acute pain.

Module 3 explores persisting or chronic pain and what can be done to help people learn self-management skills. People often need support to rebuild their lives in a context where medicines and therapies may not provide satisfactory pain relief. Many argue that persisting pain should be viewed and given the same status as any long-term condition.
